Update PTF content for z/OS maintenance deliveries

This release provides significant changes in the way Universal Agent maintenance releases for z/OS are prepared.

These changes were originally introduced in the Universal Agent 7.7, 7.8, 7.9, and 8.0 May 2026 maintenance releases as D-14348 and D-14399. Previous maintenance deliveries for some of those versions may have still provided partial PTF packages. The 8.1 release will be the first one that no longer provides partial PTF deliveries for all of its maintenance releases.

Moving forward, all components subject to change after an initial .0 release will be provided in each maintenance delivery. This includes:

  • MVS and USS load modules
  • Universal Agent component message catalogs (i.e., those members in the &HLQ..UNV.SUNVNLS PDS)
  • Sample configuration files, installed to &HLQ..UNV.SUNVSAMP

This change ensures that any 3pp vendor library updates -- particularly those that remediate CVEs -- are always available for any component that uses that library.

This change means that cumulative PTF packages will be larger than they were in older Agent maintenance releases. This larger PTF delivery requires a change to an existing installation dataset and a change to a JCL procedure used during Universal Agent installs and upgrades. A new install job is provided in the PTF distribution to deliver both of these changes. A new job will also need to be run before the UNVMTRCV job is run, which receives the PTFs.

info

Please read the updated instructions for installing PTF maintenance releases in the z/OS Installation - Cumulative PTF Maintenance page before installing subsequent maintenance provided for this release.

B-24214

All

UAGSRV

Provides a new SERVICE_TIMEOUT configuration option for the Universal Agent Server. When this option is set, the connection between the Agent and the OMS Server will no longer be recycled simply due to inactivity. If the Agent and Controller can successfully exchange a message, the connection will be kept as-is. The connection will continue to be recycled when a real network disruption has occurred and the connection needs to be recovered.

info

This change requires Universal Controller item B-24215, delivered with the Universal Controller 8.1.0.0 release.

B-24447

z/OS

UAGSRV

Provides the ability to re-use a z/OS task instance's JCL from the Agent's JCL_SAVE_LIBRARY location, instead of the task definition's JCL Location or JCL Override Location. This allows an exact copy of the task instance's JCL to be executed at rerun.

info

This change requires Universal Controller item B-24548, delivered with the Universal Controller 8.1.0.0 release.

D-09560

z/OS

UAGSRV
UAGU84

Ensure that a z/OS task instance's exit code and all of its step condition codes match what is reported by JES.

This corrects a problem observed for some z/OS applications that set exit codes in an unexpected manner, which caused UAG Server to report exit code values greater than the 4095 allowed by z/OS.

info

Note that this fix represents a change in behavior for UAG Server. z/OS tasks with exit and/or step condition code processing whose conditions are authored using the errant values reported by UAG Server may no longer evaluate those conditions as they did before this fix. With this fix, you can now author those conditions with values that reliably match JES values.

This only affects instances where UAG does not report exit or step condition codes that match JES. If UAG reports those values correctly in the z/OS task instance, the behavior will not change.

D-11731

z/OS

UAGSRV

Fixes a problem where a secondary Universal Agent in a sysplex configuration shuts down whenever it receives license information that does not permit secondary agents. This may only be a transient situation, as is the case when the the Universal Controller is upgraded or restarted.

The secondary Agent will now stay active, but paused. The Agent will resume its processing when an updated license that allows secondary z/OS Agents is received.

UAGSRV
UAGWMDBX

Ensure that z/OS external task monitors correctly identify jobs that fail with message IEF453 as a JCL error and a job failure.

This fix also includes handling for WTO messages that are prefixed with an asterisk ('*'). Prior to this change, UAG Server was unable to properly detect the IEF453 message.

D-14049

z/OS

UAGSRV

Fixes a problem where a z/OS Monitor may not accurately capture the status of externally tracked jobs when a from-to time scope is set for the task.

info

This fix requires a version of Universal Controller that contains the fix delivered by D-15795.

D-15491

Unix
Windows
z/OS

USAP

Fixes a problem that appears on Windows, but required a change for all platforms.

Specifically, an SAP process chain ID that is prefixed with a forward slash ('/') was improperly handled on Windows. Because Universal Agent components on Windows recognize the forward slash or a hypen ('-') as a command option prefix (e.g., -chainid or /chainid), any command line value that contains a leading slash must be quoted with a preceding space (i.e., -chainid " /ABC/DEF"). This fix causes the leading space to be dropped from the actual chain ID value (i.e., "/ABC/DEF").

D-15517

z/OS

UAGSRV

Fixes an issue where a failed job may not allow a restart/rerun of some steps when the following apply:

  • The step creates a new generation of a GDG dataset
  • UAG Server incorrectly identifies that dataset as an input temporary dataset

Update the OpenSSL 3pp vendor library to remediate Critical- and High-severity CVEs.

Virtually all Universal Agent components use OpenSSL for cryptographic functions. Not all components have user-facing visibility, but for practical purposes, a change to OpenSSL is a change to all Universal Agent components.

UAGSRV

Fixes a problem where a z/OS Agent that is configured a primary agent in Sysplex configuration could fail following a failover recovery. For example, if an Agent that normally operates as the primary agent was brought down or demoted to a secondary agent, that Agent could encounter an S430 ABEND upon restart or during return to its role as primary agent.

UAGSRV

D-16526

z/OS

Install

Provides the following changes to jobs used to install PTF maintanenance for Universal Agent:

  • UNVMTPRE: increases the allocation for the backup SMPPTS dataset, which is created prior to reallocating the production SMPPTS dataset.
  • UNVMTRCV: compresses the SMPPTS PDS before receiving PTFs into it
  • UNVMTACC: compresses the SMPPTS PDS after accepting PTFs delivered for maintenance

The steps in UNVMTRCV and UNVMTACC to compress the SMPPTS PDS were added to fix any fragmentation that might occur following multiple maintenance release installs. Over time, the repeated PTF additions and deletions could cause that dataset to become fragmented, reducing its usable space. Compressing the dataset recovers that "lost" space.
